Glasgow Marina outlined

July 21, 2009

Glasgow is set to gain a 300-berth marina on the southern bank of the Clyde, according to plans outlined this week by Scottish Enterprise. Formerly the site of the Prince's Dock, this unused land beside Glasgow Science Centre has been earmarked for an imaginative development which could include floating restaurants and moorings for house boats. Scottish Enterprise are encouraging developers to put forward their own ideas for how the site could be made to stand out.

The marina would centre on a canting basin, already the home of a seaplane operator, and could become a tourist destination in its own right, with hotels being constructed nearby. The marina would be the latest in a long line of redevelopment projects along this stretch of the river, with the new Pacific Quay media village close at hand and a number of modern apartment developments recently completed. There are still a number of undeveloped gap sites on the river's opposite bank within the financial services district, which are owned by developers but not currently being progressed.

Commenting on the plans for the marina, Clyde Waterfront director Derek McCrindle said: "We want something that combines the sea planes, berthing for motor cruisers and maybe floating restaurants and offices. It would be brilliant to have this in place for the 2014 Commonwealth Games."
